Specialdeals’ Mission to Build A Self-Expanding O2O Service Platform

Specialdeals has a new mission. It is to build a self-expanding online-to-offline (O2O) platform connecting online users and offline businesses without burning money. Burning too much money has been recognized as the common problem of most ecommerce sites and deal sites. Specialdeals believes two reasons contribute to the money burning problem. First is the one buyer to one deal (i.e., one-to-one) type of transaction connection. Second is pre-paying full deal amount before getting the service from the business. These two factors combined create (4) “lacking” in sticky, loyal, social, and viral attributes and (4) “excessive” in money burning, opportunistic customers/merchants/websites, disputes, and customer service. The common wisdom to solve the money burning problem seems to be burning more money.

Specialdeals added the “micro payment” improvement to the one-to-one traction requiring the buyer to pay only a small service (e.g., 5% of the total saving value) to secure the discount first and then pay merchants directly the discounted price. Specialdeals takes no commissions (0%) from the merchants. This micro payment model is different from the traditional coupon model where merchants pay 100% of the coupon production/advertising fees and consumers pay 0% to get the free coupons. It is also different from the Groupon model where consumers pay 100% the deal price upfront and merchants pay 20% or more commissions to deal sites. Specialdeals thinks each model has its own market but believes the micro payment model offers the best value and has the biggest potential.

Specialdeals adopts the micro payment model for four reasons:

  1. It offers the best brand promise and value proposition for merchants and consumers. Merchants offer the best deals free of charge and get paid 100% directly from their customers. Consumers are guaranteed to find the best deals and enjoy the biggest savings with the smallest micro payments.
  2. It solves all consumer and merchant related problems found in current deal sites.
  3. It allows Specialdeals to connect to online virtual currency systems such as facebook credits and iTune credits to connect more online users to offline businesses. This helps online currency find an offline exit. All virtual currency systems require some percentage of “tax” from the apps using the currency. Because the micro payment service fee collected by Specialdeals does not need to be shared with merchants and others, Specialdeals can afford to pay the 30% tax to facebook, for example, and still keep the remaining 70%. This virtual currency connection would not be possible if the traditional deal site’s model of accepting full deal price was adopted since it would be very difficult to get 30% commission from merchants to pay for the virtual currency tax alone.
  4. It serves as a payment foundation for Specialdeals’ other services.

Besides the one-to-one type of connection, Specialdeals also plans to offer one-to-many type of member service called VIPGaGa to allow its members to pay one membership fee to access all free experience deals, discounted experience deals, and discounted VIP or charge card deals from all merchants. To better serve our VIP members, we plan to recruit only the top merchants who can still (optionally) offer discounts but more importantly agree to honor our new VIP services such as Express Pass Service (without waiting in line to get service), Exclusive Reservation Service (at places normally do not accept reservations), Surprise VIP Gifts, etc. We believe these users will feel proud of our VIPGaGa membership and happy to spread the words and pay the membership fee for not just saving money but more importantly for its prestigious status, VIP privileges, and convenience.

Specialdeals will take one step further to offer many-to-many type of local gathering service to allow its members to effortlessly discover, join, and organize local gatherings. Specialdeals will charge a small fee for the service and encourage its members to download and use its specialized mobile app that facilitates the gatherings. This many-to-many local gathering service will not just provide the money-saving value to its members but also value of meeting friends, sharing interests, and having fun. This multitude of value will motivate Specialdeals members to promote Specialdeals’ website and mobile app, increase their usage, stickiness, loyalty, and create explosive viral growth for Specialdeals without burning money.

By offering one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many types of connections, Specialdeals becomes a complete and self-expanding O2O service platform. It can generate strong and persistent income growth from multiple revenue sources of transaction, subscription, and service. Specialdeals has completed its user survey and data analysis to prove its hypothesis and guide its development. Specialdeals has also recruited hundreds of volunteer beta testers from its user survey. Specialdeals will soon launch the VIPGaGa membership service and will start public testing of its local gathering service in March. Specialdeals’ China operation called “Yikuair” is building the same self-expanding O2O service platform for the China market. Specialdeals is very confident to prove its business model in the coming months and deliver its promise of building a self-expanding O2O platform without burning money.

Deal Sites Terminator (团购终结者)

We’ve attracted the attention from China already. We got our latest news coverage by the leading Chinese financial publication, CBN (第一财经). This “Deal Sites Terminator” (团购终结者) article was published in the latest (10/31/2011) issue of CBN Weekly (第一财经周刊) on pages 94-95 (click here to see the scanned version). The online version can be viewed here (use Google Translate if you can’t read Chinese).

I did not expect the reporter to use “Deal Sites Terminator” as the title. But I think he is a firm believer of our model after we brought him to one of our offline merchants to experience it first hand.  The article does cover three important things:

  2. Described the model through a flow diagram and a real-life example
  3. Mentioned our real-time redemption system and patents

We do not expect to terminate all the deal sites. We do expect some of them to convert to our SOLOGAMOCO model.

Move Over LBS and SOLOMO, Here Comes SOLOGAMOCO!

In this blog, I will explain the word “SOLOGAMOCO” we invented and why it is disruptive and beyond Social/Local/Mobile (SOLOMO) and Location Based Services (LBS).

What is “SOLOGAMOCO”?

Specialdeals.com invented the word “SOLOGAMOCO” to describe its business model bridging Social, Local, Gaming, Mobile, and Commerce into one Online-to-Offline (O2O) marketplace. We believe the convergence of these areas presents us a unique opportunity to innovate and disrupt the O2O space. Below are what we see the unique opportunities in the five SOLOGAMOCO areas:

  • SOcial – The Internet has evolved from one-to-one emailing and one-to-many web browsing to many-to-many social networking. Companies that know how to foster the power of many-to-many social interaction can achieve explosive overnight success.
  • LOcal – Most of our money is spent on local businesses within the 2-mile radius of our home. More and more local information is avaible from our social networks and mobile devices.
  • GAming – Social games are what keep people engaged and entertained these days. We believe the next killer games will be the O2O games bridging the online virtual world with the offline real deals.
  • MObile – Internet usage from mobile devices has already surpassed that of desktop computers. Soon everyone in the world will be using a smart phone and this trend will bring the power of local discovery to every person on the planet earth.
  • COmmerce –  Commerce has been liberated to be anytime and anywhere the purchase intent is. Our Micro-Payment model promotes this liberation even more. It will change the way people purchase with micro payments just as Twitter changed the way people communicate with micro blogs.

What makes “SOLOGAMOCO” disruptive?

  • Our micro payment model and PayEVER service disrupts the way current deal sites are operating and solves all consumer and merchant related problems exist in these sites.

  • Our move of offline purchases to the point of thought and intent online is disruptive. Our CheckinEVER service is designed for this disruption and data collection.
  • Our integration of social, local, gaming, and commerce in the mobile applications is disruptive. As you can see from the SOLOGAMOCO diagram below, we put “Mobile” in the center because our mobile applications connect the user’s social world, present relevant local content to the user, engage and entertain the user with social games, and offer the user special deals that can be purchased and redeemed in real time.

Can you give me a “SOLOGAMOCO” example?

Imagine we know all the social activities you and your friends have done (e.g., checking ins, sending twits, marking likes, writing reviews/posts, making friends, getting followers or following others, etc.) and from which we can calculate in real time your social influence score at your current location. You can then use the score to play our social games to win prizes and rewards. We also “reward” you with the nearby special deals based on your profile and your current social/local influence score. You can use virtual currency such as Sina Weibi, iTune Credits, Facebook Credits, or Zynga Game Points to purchase these special deals.

As you can see from this SOLOGAMOCO example, we reward people’s social activities with local special deals and keep them engaged and entertained with social games. We also collect user data and promote commerce transactions.

What is the potential of “SOLOGAMOCO” marketplace?

We see Specialdeals as an O2O connector connecting online users and offline businesses in its SOLOGAMOCO Marketplace to serve both impulse and intent buying. Billions of dollars in offline businesses can be accounted for via our O2O connection. Consumers can identify a product or service online and pay a small deposit payment to get a redemption code that can be shown in a mobile device to redeem the deal at the retail location. In this process, we charge consumers a small 5-10% “service fee”. We collect consumer data and drive business to local merchants without charging them anything. This is a win-win for everyone.

We believe our SOLOGAMOCO marketplace will cause the major shift in usage of consumers’ wallet and mobile device. It will cause a lifestyle change too as people will always check Specialdeals for the best deals. It is a trillion dollar opportunity and bigger than search (Google) or any social network (Facebook).

Introducing Specialdeals Marketplace

In my last blog, I described the PayEVER and CheckinEVER services. They are the core services in our business model bridging Social, Local, Gaming, Mobile, and Commerce (SOLOGAMOCO) into one marketplace. The marketplace is called “Specialdeals Marketplace” at Specialdeals.com in US and “一块儿微集市” at Yikuair.com in China (in partnership with China’s largest social network site, Sina Weibo).

Specialdeals Marketplace’s value proposition for merchants is very simple – Merchants simply offer the best $ off or % off special deals and we will promote them (via our websites, social apps, and mobile apps) free of charge. Merchants get paid 100% directly from customers buying these special deals. The value proposition for consumers which is also our brand promise is simple too – Consumers are guaranteed to find the best deals and enjoy the biggest savings with small micro payments.

The key to building the Specialdeals Marketplace is our Micro-Payment model (branded as PayEVER) that disrupts the way current deal sites are operating. PayEVER Micro-Payment allows virtual currency issuing companies (e.g., Sina Weibo Dollars, iTune Credits, Facebook Credits, Zynga Game Points) to generate additional revenue from our special deals (by allowing their members to use their virtual currency to buy special deals in our marketplace). As Twitter changed the way we communicate with their 140 character Micro-Blogs, we plan to change the way consumers purchase with our PayEVER Micro-Payments.

As part of Specialdeals Marketplace, we will soon offer the CheckinEVER service to reward our members’ check-ins with points and credits and through check-in deals via our mobile apps. CheckinEVER supports all popular check-in services and offers special deals for individual check-ins, group check-ins, repeated check-ins, and charity check-ins. CheckinEVER service is completely self serviceable and very simple to set up by merchants themselves. CheckinEVER helps merchants increase their customers’ visits and loyalty. Specialdeals’ Breakthrough O2O Model – Part One

Everyone knows Groupon’s simple business model that is offering deeply discounted products and services for people to purchase online first and redeem them later. All other deal sites are copying this same model and operating pretty much the same way.

Specialdeals will soon announce a breakthrough online-to-offline (O2O) business model that is different from Groupon’s and all other deal sites’ model. The new model is creatively designed to be on the consumer side and the merchant side. It solves all consumer and merchant related problems found in current deal sites. This distinct and disruptive model offers true win-win-win for consumers, merchants, and the community.

This is the first part of the two-part blog. Part one describes the problems experienced by the current deal sites’ customers and merchants. Part two will describe our new model and the solutions it offers to solve all these problems. Part two will be published after we launch the services based on the new model in early June.

Why Specialdeals’ Real-Time Redemption Is So Special?

A key to bridging online payment to offline services is the redemption process.  The best solution is for the merchant to have the hardware and Internet access to be able to verify a payment made by the consumer, similar to how a credit card swipe machine works.  However, when payments are made online, there is no good way for merchants to verify the payment without the proper hardware or Internet access… until now.

Specialdeals has come up with a redemption process that meets the following 8 criteria to give merchants and customers great confidence and convenience:

Currently, we support payments made with credit cards, PayPal, and Google Checkout. Merchants will get new customers if they don’t support these payment methods. Consumers can use these secure payment methods to pay for the products and services from the merchants who do not support these payment methods. This is one of the reasons why we are building the Specialdeals online bridge and it is a win-win for both merchants and consumers.
